The patient is dealing with pain, depression, the feeling of everyone having control of their lives but them. Their pride and ego has been wounded. Not just their bodies. They need to be reminded just how important they are to others. It is part of the healing process too. Some cancer patients refuse to see anyone. They desperately need them, but refuse to allow visitors. Their egos are bruised and broken. They don’t want people to see what the cancer has done to them. They need you now more than ever. Don’t let them shut you out. It’s not what they really want and it sure isn’t what they need. Visit. Sit and chat with them. Pray with them silently or together. Talk about all the things you used to talk about. They aren’t dead…they are just aren’t able to do all the things they used to do at this time in their life. Offer them hope through simple things like talking about going fishing again. Talk about the big one you still have to go after. Remind them of what it feels like to stand in the fresh air with the sun shining on the lake as you watch the fish breaking water on the lake. In so doing, you are reminding them what life feels like and that there is hope for them to do the very things they loved. I have a picture on my wall that brings me great joy every time I look at it. My father had cancer and loved to go out on the lake. One day my youngest brother and I took him out in the boat for a short time. I just happened to get the most remarkable picture of him smiling as the sun shone down on him. It was the last time he ever got to go out on the lake. The picture is proof how a simple pleasure made a big difference in his day. He was able for a short time to forget his cancer and enjoy life. It’s human nature to forget to tell people how we really feel about them. Many times when a loved one is critically ill we get the chance to tell them…but not always. Time can clip away. And I can’t tell you how many times I have been at a funeral and heard someone say, “if only they knew this many people cared when they were alive”. It’s true. Most of us go out of this life never knowing what people thought about us and whether we may a difference in their lives. Don’t wait...tell the people in your life just how much they mean to you.
